Ola Hemphill developed the 'Solitair Math Multiplication' cards set in the 1970's. The cards set name was later changed to 'Multiplication Facts All By Myself.' Ms. Hemphill taught Math Lab for grades 5-8 from 1976 to1984. During that time her goal was to provide a student with a fast and fun method to practice multiplication facts alone. She realized that older students didn't want to be tutored with flash cards. Ms. Hemphill cut up index cards for several years to provide practice for elementary, middle, high school students and adults taking Adult Ed. math classes. Her former Adult Ed. students included a 49 year old grandmother who desired to learn multiplication facts and appreciated the opportunity to practice alone.
Multiplication Facts All By Myself cards were professionally made in 1992 and have been sold to several schools. Teachers and students alike enjoy the independence students have when practicing with the cards. Math Standardized Test Scores for third and fourth graders have shown improvement in schools that purchased sets of cards for entire classes. One of Ms. Hemphill's goals since retiring from teaching mathematics in 2001 is to distribute the cards in stores throughout the nation so they are readily available for all who desire to learn or review times tables.
